Formentera has a lot of stunning beaches but only two are adapted for beach lovers with a mobility disability: Platja Es Pujols and Platja Des Arenals. (This content was written by Eleonora after an in-person visit to Es Pujols in May 2024).
Es Pujols has the advantage of being in the little town of Pujols, and it features a nice promenade with cute little shops and lots of restaurants for all tastes. Everything in the promenade is flat, step free and you can go into every single place freely. Strangely enough though, there are no toilets on the promenade, but most restaurants have an accessible toilet that you can ask to use, even if you are not a customer.
The beach itself has a wooden ramp to go down (might need some help going back up) and then a spacious wooden shack structure to set up your beach post for the day - for free. There is an bit of an unpractical detail: there is only one beach chair available.
The lifeguard can help you by taking you to the water and then out, but on this beach, at the time of the visit (May 2024), they only have one lifeguard at the time, so you have to be able to manage mostly by yourself. Also, the tower where the beach chair is stationed is a bit far away from the accessible beach spot, so you need to be able to send someone to call the lifeguard.
After a nice chat with the Italian lifeguard that was on the beach, we got the tip that Es Arenals beach is better equipped for accessibility, and the lifeguard team is made of 3 people, so they can better help people in the water and out. Some practical info from the GreenTour project website:
Formentera Beach Accessibility Services (May 1 - Sept 30) Lifeguards offer a free assistance service for visitors with reduced mobility. Trained in accessibility, they provide amphibious chairs and allow guide and assistance dogs. Reservations: +34 971 32 10 87.
Parking & Access Two reserved PMR parking spots lead to a smooth wooden walkway that reaches the beach. The path is mostly flat with a slight incline near the end (max 8%). The walkway is 1.6m wide with handrails and protection for easy navigation.
Beach Area A rolling wooden ramp connects to a shaded area reserved for PMRs (4.6 x 4.6m).
Facilities Two accessible toilets (small fee: €0.50) are located near the walkway and parking.
Also, tip from the local, the Arenals beach is more beautiful, as it is not an urban beach but more immersed in nature. So if you want to stay in a quieter place and enjoy nature, we suggest finding accommodation near Es Arenals. If you want to be closer to shops and town life, El Pujols is the place. The other beaches on Formentera are mostly not wheelchair adapted, but you might be able to visit some of them. We recommend exploring, Formentera is quite small so you have time to try out different places.
